An attention grabbing paper-cut named ‘Belt and Road’ is full of signatures of foreign ambassadors in Hong Kong, showing their appreciation of China’s artistic traditions and culture.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), Yu Zhongmin also created a special piece depicting symbols of the nation.

The exhibition forms part of the Cultural and Natural Heritage Day event in Guangzhou. On both June 9th and 16th, cultural shows will be staged at Kwong Ching Street, and paper cutting classes will be given by Yu Zhongmin on June 1st, 9th, 16th and 22nd.

Chinese paper-cut was inscribed in 2009 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, and the world organization noted that the medium is a “popular art integral to everyday life” in China.

Traditional paper cutting craft varies from place to place in China; and in Guangdong this folk art on paper which has been passed down for centuries is known for its unique way of cutting and materials used.

As the founder of Lingnan Rong School, Yu Zhongmin has specialized in the art form for over 20 years. He is now the vice chairman of Guangzhou Paper-cutting Association and a visiting professor of the Guangzhou Light Industry Technician College. Yu was recognised as one of the 100 people to have made an outstanding contribution to Guangdong in 2012.
