Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department announced at a press conference on May 31st, that Guangdong police have destroyed more than 300 criminal gangs, with over 5400 suspects being seized from January to May this year.
“This is the third year Guangdong police have run ‘Jufeng’, a special campaign to fight against guns, drugs, telecommunication fraud, gambling, pornographic material, robbery and counterfeit goods,” said Lin Weixiong, Deputy Director-general of Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department. “More action will be taken to make Guangdong one of the safest regions in China.”
Furthermore, according to Lin, this is the first time that Guangdong police has made anti-smuggling a priority.
Zhou Huashan, Director of Anti-smuggling Bureau of Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, indicated that Guangdong police closed around 13,4000 smuggling cases in 2018, with a net worth of over 20 billion yuan.
According to Zhou, Guangdong police apprehended a smuggling gang on March 30th this year, which led to more than 30 tons of ivory from Nigeria being seized.
“Guangdong police will step up efforts to crack down on this smuggling of ivory and other illegal goods,” Zhou added.
